Hymer Door Seal
As with any motorhome or RV, the rubber seals and trims on a Hymer should be preemptively replaced to ensure they are providing an adequate seal that reduces the chance of water ingress and expensive damp repairs.
We have started to see that Hymer motorhomes manufactured around 10 years ago now require replacement seals around the windows and doors. These motorhomes are now of an age where repeated use over the last decade has caused the sealing profiles to start showing signs of damage or over compression.
We were recently visited by a customer looking for a replacement cab door seal for their Hymer. Looking at their vehicle, the current section had seen better days and had started to tear at the bottom. This is common with door seals that are repeatedly stood on as you walk through the doorway. Helping this customer find a like-for-like replacement was important to ensuring the longevity of her van and preventing water damage caused by unwanted water ingress.
Most Hymers are fitted with a sealing profile similar to our CS5883. This product is commonly used as a Hymer cab door seal, but is also fitted on some early habitation doors. From our experience, it can be used as a replacement product on B Class Models, BM Starline, S Class and Camp Models up to approximately 2002. However, it would still work as a suitable replacement on other doors that are using a similar shaped profile.
The main difference between this profile and other clip on edge trims is the ivory coloured tail. This tail is finishing strip that covers the join between the edge of the door frame and wall panel. Whilst it is not essential, we find that most Hymers have been manufactured with this finishing tail in mind, and using a different profile can show a join that the engineers originally wanted covered. It should hang vertical against the body of the vehicle.
This ivory tail is approximately 25mm to 30mm long when vertically extended down the interior wall of the van.
Our edge trim also features a side seal that is approximately 14mm diameter. This is the part that compresses when the door is closed to create a watertight seal. We recommend compressing sponge sealing bulbs by approximately 30% to create a good seal and minimises the chance of compression set from over compression.
This profile fits over a 1.5mm to 2.5mm panel edge.
However, as with any seal replacement, it is worth looking at the end profile of your current section before buying a replacement product. By studying the cross-sectional profile, you can see the unique shape of the rubber seal and purchase a replacement product that matches the shape and size of your current seal. Please feel free to contact our technical team if you would like help identifying a replacement rubber seal for your vehicle. You can email us a photograph of the end profile to sales@sealsplusdirect.co.uk.
