Case Study: Using an Edge Trim to Seal the Deck and Hatch on a Model Yacht

Model yachts are scaled-down replicas of real yachts, usually designed and manufactured by hobbyists and enthusiasts who enjoy building, sailing or displaying them. These miniature vessels often feature intricate details that replicate the design, structure and functionality of their full-sized counterparts. Model yachts can range from simple static models meant for display to fully operational and radio-controlled sailboats designed for racing on ponds and lakes. The hobby combines craftsmanship, engineering and a love of sailing, for people who appreciate the elegance and mechanics of maritime vessels.

Mini Folkboat with Rubber Edge Trim

A Folkboat is a sailboat renowned for its classic design, seaworthiness and ease of handling. Originally designed in Scandinavia in 1942, the Folkboat has become a beloved choice for both recreational sailors and competitive racing enthusiasts worldwide. With its graceful lines, long keel and compact size, typically around 25 feet in length, the Folkboat is ideal for coastal cruising but still capable of handling challenging offshore conditions. Its simplicity and reliability have made it a timeless icon in the sailing community.

We were recently visited by one of our regular customers who uses a rubber clip on edge trim to create a seal between the deck and hatch on a “Mini Folkboat”. This model is a 1/8th scale radio controlled model yacht based on the Folkboat.

Whilst the actual boat measures around 25 feet, the “Mini Folkboat” is approximately 1 metre in length and has a 30cm beam. Fully rigged, this model stands at 1.6 meters tall and weighs just over 5 kg. The hull is carefully moulded to authentically replicate the classic clinker design and can be customized with the customer’s preferred colour and sail number. Delivered as a "Ready to Run" package, the model comes complete with a radio transmitter and is fully prepared for sailing straight out of the box.

These model yachts have been built by Charles in Dorset for the last 3 years. He is able to manufacture around 10 units per year, which have been sold to customers throughout the UK.
