Watertight Hatch Packing Combination Seals
Watertight hatch packing is a type of combination seal used in watertight doors, hatches, skylights, and ullage plugs that have multiple heavy-duty latching points. They are commonly found on large ships such as cruise ships, oil tankers and Naval ships to help isolate sections of the vessel in the event of flooding or fire.
Hatch packing rubber seals are manufactured with a cellular sponge core bonded in the centre of a solid outer rubber skin. The solid rubber face strengthens the section whilst the internal cellular sponge creates a water tight seal when compressed. To allow for welds in the bottom of the channel, we chamfer the bottom corners of the section.
These sections are
available in a range of different sizes and are commonly manufactured from
solid natural rubber and sponge natural rubber. As natural rubber has excellent
compression recovery, it is ideal for heavy-duty hatches where the section will
be subjected to extreme force. However, it is also possible to manufacture
hatch packing using Neoprene rubber which allows for higher temperatures and
ozone resistance or Nitrile rubber which is gas and oil resistant. Please
